PhD position: Use of biostimulants to improve heat and drought tolerance of crops

We are seeking a PhD candidate to investigate the effect of biostimulants on heat and drought tolerance in crops, with a focus on enhancing crop resilience to climate change. As global temperatures rise and water availability becomes increasingly unpredictable, improving crop tolerance to these stressors is crucial for sustainable agriculture. Biostimulants, including natural substances and microorganisms, have the potential to boost plant stress resistance, but the mechanisms and their effectiveness under field conditions remain vague.

The specific aims of the PhD research will include:

1. Evaluating the effectiveness of different biostimulants in improving crop performance under heat and drought conditions. The focus will initially be on potatoes, maize and soybean.
2. Investigating the physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms through which biostimulants enhance crop stress tolerance.
3. Conducting field trials in South Africa to assess the practical application of biostimulants for heat and drought resistance in crops.
4. Integrating findings into recommendations for improving crop resilience to climate change.

The PhD candidate will be registered with the Department of Soil, Crop, and Climate Sciences at the University of the Free State, South Africa, and will contribute to ongoing research within the Research Chair in Climate Change and Agriculture. Field research will focus on key agricultural regions in South Africa.

Applicants should hold an M.Sc. degree in Agronomy, Crop Science, Crop Physiology, or a related field. Experience in plant stress physiology, biostimulants, and conducting fieldwork in agricultural settings will be advantageous. Strong analytical skills and an interest in climate-resilient agriculture are also important.
